Room assignment

Okay so we have finally received our classroom assignents. I will be a KG1 teacher. To say I was slightly disappointed is a mild understatement. I wanted KG2. However I’ll be fine.

I got Elise registered for school. She’s got her school ID and some uniforms. (That set me back and I’m frustrated with this whole financial situation. If I could have planned this better I would have but that’s water under the bridge now.)

Currently I have 17 kids. 10 boys 7 girls. I’m excited about those numbers and the makeup. I would rather have a class full of boys than girls. I haven’t meet my TA (teacher assistant) yet. Since she was a returning teacher she won’t be here until the 24th.

I won’t bore you with the whole sitting around twiddling my thumbs because there is nothing for us to do. I don’t want to the setup my room without my TA. We’ve sat in two power point presentations….oh no wait 3.

1. To welcome us 2. On classroom management 3. On the tool they use to take attendance and enter grades.

The two days so far could have been condensed down to one day. To be bored from not having anything to do is worse than sitting in boring meetings and PD. I think.

I’ll post before and after pictures later once the room is finished and ready for students.
Quick up date:

Elise finally got her bed. Now let’s see how long it takes to get the curtain put up…anyone got some tools

Getting settled in PART 2

Okay I’m no planner I have always kinda just gone with the flow. Stressing is pointless. With that being said it’s Friday my first full day in Kuwait.

My coworkers were stressing about the whole no wifi thing. So let’s get dressed and go find wifi or get a SIM card. We ended up getting SIM cards. Contacted the principal to find out the game plan. She says I’ll be there in 5 minutes. So she gets us takes us out to breakfast and we tour the school. We get our settling in allowance. She takes us to get a few things to last until Sunday. Apparently Sunday they will take us to get some stuff. So I bought 16.195 KD worth of food and towels. My coworkers spent about 40KD. We finally get wifi about 930pm. I wasn’t tripping because I have T-mobile and my phone was working. Unlimited data and text. Granted I had to reset my phone to access the unlimited data part. Anyways pictures below of my school and apartment.

Getting settled in…..

Okay so we arrived in Kuwait Thursday night around 1030pm local time….well that’s the time we were walking out the airport. It was hot. It was crowded. I was tired. I wanted to see my new living arrangements. Let’s go.

After being on a 45 minute bumpy plane ride I really wasn’t up for a drive through Kuwait at unprecedented speeds. However we arrived safely. Got all unloaded and three of us would be on the same floor. One apartment was gonna a have 2 beds and that would be ours. We walked through all three Apartments and no second bed. Okay fine whatever. I’ll be in apartment 15 since it was the last one and we all assumed it had a 3rd bed. One of the other Apartments didn’t have AC. Yeah well I wasn’t staying there and that wasn’t my issue. They will get me another bed. Uh ya think. Walking around. I don’t have a wardrobe…..ugh. The other two Apartments have a wardrobe. Okay don’t trip. I’ll be fine. Tick Tock…..no cable no internet….Huh? Why not? I don’t even have pictures to prove what was in my refrigerator. Nothing went together to create a meal. Cheese, bread, water, juice, soda, a basket of snacks and a small basket of fruit…..ugh and we haven’t had dinner yet. Okay don’t trip we’ll figure this out. So one of my coworkers goes downstairs  (we are on the 5tg floor by the way and yes we have an elevator. Apparently 3 peices of gym equipment and this area they say is a pool. Again you need to pictures to believe me.)

Anyways my coworker comes back up and says the guy across the street in what we’ll call a bakery shop tells her there is dunkin donuts still open and maybe one of the pizza places. By this point it’s closing in on midnight.

We go to the bakery place and I ask if he takes American US dollars cause I didn’t have any KG (Kuwaiti money) he says and I quote “don’t worry about you pay later ” me thank you sir. I order a pizza and some meat sandwich  (kinda like a calzone) He then gives Elise a box of pastries. I’m like get out of here dude I’m now a customer for as long as stay here. Finally we eat and get all cleaned up I put her to bed.

I literally fight with the washing machine. I couldn’t figure out how to get the thing to work. Pulled out the manual and all. Took a shower came back and still couldn’t figure it out. Came close to tears. I did not need anything else to go wrong tonight. I called it a day and went to bed. Pictures of my apartment will be in my next post.

Hotel food

Okay there are times the only kind of hotel food I like is breakfast and delivery from outside the hotel.

Well that is not through case here. I have yet to

1. Finish my whole meal

2. Eat something I didn’t like

My first meal was dinner. It was a 3 course meal. A salad, shrimp and fish, and fruit salad. AMAZING! I had pictures in my previous post.

Breakfast the following morning was just as amazing. It was a buffet. Chicken sausage is great. I just might be okay with no pork.

Lunch was another 3 course meal. I couldn’t even finish. I had pan fried hammour with garlic sauce. Of course the salad and fruit salad.

Dinner was seafood night. I was overwhelmed. The food looked too good to eat. I sampled some of everything just because I could.

The best calm soup hands down. I had two bowls but I didn’t finish either bowl.

I’m looking forward to my last two meals here tomorrow.

Day 1…I’m in Bahrain in

Okay so today was my first full day in Bahrain. I’m feeling pretty good.

We took our medical exams. Blood, x-ray and urine sample. Simple enough.

Lesson number 2: don’t look while they are driving. Take in the scenery. Your nerves will thank you.

Went to the mall. Well one of the malls. 3 floors I believe we covered about 1/3 of the building.

Because what child wouldn’t want to play human snakes and ladders (shutes and ladders) I would play if they would allow it.

We went into this store that was pretty much like a walmart. If you want it they had it.

Wheels up

Okay the time has come for us to depart.

(I’m currently in a hotel in Bahrain so I’m recapping what happened)

I have made it a point to make my goodbyes simple. No tears. No issue. I don’t have it me to board a plane all teary eyed plus my daughter is looking to me and is taking her cues from me.

Anyways my mom took us the airport in Charleston for the first flight to which took us to JFK. Easy enough. We charge up and wait.

 Wheels up number 1.

Let me take a moment to discuss the snack. Who ever knew about these and did not tell me, we are no longer friends

Land in JFK at terminal 5 had to get to terminal 8. Totally forgot the instructions rhe lady gave me in Charleston. I knew I had some walking to do. So I stop and ask. I follow the yellow signs as directed. Go through security and BAM back where I started. I ask for help again and they are mad like I am because they said I should have gone never through security for a flight that is not in that terminal  (guess what I’m still in terminal 5) Flight boards at 9 when I got off my plane I had two hours. Okay now I’m down to 45 minutes. Now we gotta book it. Walk back and pay closer attention for signs to the air train. Finally get to the air train. I’m hungry and irritated. Get to the other side of life. Go through security AGAIN! Now I gotta find my gate. Gate is not listed on our boarding pass. Ask for help. Find the departure directory. Gate 16. Thank God it’s right there. I just sit on the floor. A gentleman was nice enough to let Elise sit in the chair. I’m hot. I’m sweaty and yep still hungry. Might have been sitting 10 minutes and I’m called to the counter. They check us in. Families get to board first. We get settled in on our flight. It will be roughly 12 hours. I’m hungry and tired where is dinner. I select a movie to watch and so does Elise. It took forever before we took off. Wheels up number 2.

It was cold as all get out on that flight. Dinner was good or I was starving either way I ate it. I went to sleep had to make my daughter go to sleep around 3am (eastern time) wherever we the sun had come up and she didn’t want to sleep. She was on movie number 3. We have five hours before we land and I did not need a sleep deprived 8 year walking through another airport. Turn that TV off and go to sleep. I went back to sleep. (Note to self: first class is our future. Sleeping on a plane is the pits. Plus the people in front of us moved their vents and it was blowing directly on me. I got the scratchy throat today to prove it)

We in Doha, Qatar around 530pm local time. It’s a 7 hour time difference. Get off the plane walk through another airport. I’m done. This airport was fancy. I let her look at some Legos and dinosaur that was roaring and whatnot. (It’s mechanical) We walk again to the other side of life. I’m tired. I buy us some water. She hungry. I’m like you gonna have to eat some of these snack and wait on the meal at the hotel.

(Lesson 1: lines do NOT exist. Almost lost my cool when this guy tired to purchase his water before me. Um excuse me sir I was here first. I’m tired and hungry and my 8 year old is watching our bags. I ended up paying for water before him. Sat down. 30 minutes later we begin boarding.)

Felt the heat for the first time. It was night time thank God. It still was unexpected. It was rude and it was disrespectful. Glasses fogging up. We board a bus to take us out to the plane.

We board our flight. Wheels up number 3. Thirty minutes later we are now in Bahrain, Qatar.

We pay for our visas.

Let me pause to discuss this one. First I had no idea what to do. Two I am tired. I am hungry. I haven’t washed since Monday at 1230pm eastern standard time. I have an ADHD 8 year old on the side of me who has not had her medicine since Monday  1230pm eastern time. Get to the counter he tells me my total. Do you take a card. No cash only. Tells me a number. I get out of line go to the ATM. Pull out my phone to convert currency. Get out local currency. Get back in line. He says it’s not enough. I’m like dude. I breath. How much do I need. Another guy is typing up on the computer. The other dude takes my card. I’m thinking we could have saved 15 minutes if the first dude would have done that. I get our passports back and walk downstairs to get our luggage. We get our luggage. I see my name for our ride. We walk outside in the heat to the van. Load up. Tip the guy.

(Lesson 2: it’s best not to look when they drive.)

We arrive at the hotel check in. Eat and shower. I’m looking for her book bag. No book bag. I ask her where is her book bag. She said the guy took it off the baggage cart and didn’t put it back. UGH her iPad is in there. I’m tired. I’ll deal with in the morning. We go to sleep. We will meet in the morning for breakfast at 8am before going to get our medical exam.

Her dinner about half way through. She tired to eat it all but it didn’t happen.

What was left of my dinner. It was delicious.

Now let me take a moment here and show you this.

soIt took me five minutes and the lights going out twice for me to figure out that I have to keep the room key in this slot for us to have lights. Took it out when we went to sleep….guess what I couldn’t charge. So forgive me if did not converse energy last night.

5 days and counting

Okay I am actually packing and I seriously want to cry. I mean real tears streaming down my cheeks ugly cry face and all. I would have NEVER thought packing for myself and an 8 year child would be this hard. I NEVER thought that making sure the suitcase was only 50lbs would be this hard.

See my plan

2 large suitcases one suitcase would have our clothes and the other would have our stuff
2 carry-on bags each plus a purse and she’d have a book bag.

Well doggone it my plan is not working out so well. I packed all the clothes I wanted to take and then I went and got a scale. THANK GOD I GOT THE SCALE. 60lbs for one bag of clothes!!!!! Okay now what. I sat down and thought. I went on Facebook. I avoided the problem. Then I went in the room. Took some things out. Re-weighed it 54lbs….okay we getting there. Took EVERYTHING out. Rolled some things. Laid flat some things. Left some things out. 50lbs. Hot damn I did it. Then I looked on the floor of the things I took out. I said a prayer. I asked myself do I really need to pack this. I have another suitcase that isn’t full but do I really want to risk it. I looked at what I had….cover up type things….well with the whole I can’t have shoulders showing rule….I guess I gotta figure this out. So I threw in the other suitcase zipped it up and walked out the room. To say I am over it, would be an understatement.

IN OTHER NEWS!!!!!

I woke up this morning to an email from my principal. She must have been reading my mind because I needed to send her an email. She wanted to know if we had any questions….um ya think. I asked the most pressing one what about my daughter and who is gonna watch her during pre-planning….bring her with you she said….okay great. AWESOME!!!

See all my issues are getting my behind over there to Kuwait. I haven’t had any issues with what will happen once I get there.

I signed up for my VPN.
I contacted my bank.
Pretty sure everyone knows that I am leaving.
I have one personal lose end to tie up (one day I will go into details about it)
Our hair is braided.
I have gone to every restaurant I wanted to while I was home.
I have drove myself CRAZY behind packing.
I have made connections prior to leaving.
I still have a few dollars left to my name.
My daughter turned 8 yesterday YAY!!!!

NOW IF THESE BAGS WOULD PACK THEMSELVES!
